Once I got it finished, I decided to leave it on. Here is the process that I went through. Please read this entire section as I made important discoveries along the way. My initial set up Things to consider: Things are a little tight around the generator bracket or alternator bracket, in my case. The gauge I used is not waterproof. But, it can be made very water resistant by liberally waxing the face of the gauge – taking special effort to push the wax under the bezel. Photo courtesy of Gregory Bender. My intermediate set up Things to consider:
Are you wondering why an HPOP gauge is so important for a diesel engine? The HPOP receives oil from the Low Pressure Oil Pump in order to drive the injectors, and the computer will then tell the injectors exactly when to fire. The pressures can be anywhere within the range of — 3, PSI.
When truck is first started, oil pressure is normal, around 40 psi. When engine temp starts up, oil pressure slowly falls until “Stop Engine – Low Oil Pressure” warning comes on. Switch truck off a few second, maybe , restart truck and back to And on and on. I’ve never seen a bad oil filter.
Install it in my home made run in stand break the cam in. Check for leaks and noises. The timing is set ,the carb is tuned. These are engines I build. I have installed hundreds of GM crate motors while working at GM dealers and working on police training vehicles without pre priming them and no issues. If I had a bad one I would get paid to replace it.
How Do I Install An Oil Pressure Gauge?
Contrary to common belief, the oil warning light has nothing to do with oil level. I get calls from people all the time who remark that their oil light is on, but they just checked the oil level with the dip stick and it was fine. That is not the way this warning system works. No VW van ever came from the factory with an oil pressure gauge or oil level indicator, just a low oil pressure warning light.
Oil Pump Pressure Gauge to PSI or 28Kg/cm for use with most cars trucks motor vehicles, most engines Tool works for both engines oil pressure and transmission fluid pressure Kit come complete with adapters for most engine and transmission applications.
If your car has pillar air bags, then pillar mounted gauge is a no-no. Look under hood at the oil filter. Base of that housing, on passenger side, you’ll see something screwed in with single wire sticking out. That is the oil pressure switch. Running the wires is very easy with a TDI of these years, because there is a plugged knockout hole in the firewall that would otherwise take the cable from the accelerator pedal. TDIs are drive by wire and the wire is routed elsewhere.
Here’s what I did. Note it comes in two portions:

Ray’s Chevy Restoration Site Converting warning lights to gauges in a Chevy truck This page will describe the conversion of my father’s ’66 Chevy truck from warning lights to gauges. This conversion involves replacing the instrument panel and wiring with parts taken from a donor truck with the factory gauge option. This conversion applies to – Chevy trucks since they all use the same instrument panel.
The oil and gas industry uses many acronyms and abbreviations.. This list is meant for indicative purposes only and should not be relied upon for anything but general information.
This page has been written using information gathered from various sources. Background In many ’80s and ’90s Ford vehicles that come equipped with an oil pressure gauge, the gauge wiring and sender came from the factory in such a away that it isn’t a “true” oil pressure gauge. There are many websites out there that explain this unexpected and deceptive piece of engineering from Ford , and if you Google for things like “ford oil pressure gauge real convert” or “f oil pressure gauge real convert” where you can find many more unhappy car and truck owners trying to figure this out – and if possible, fix it.
Ford even had the audacity to release a service bulletin that explained to dealers how to retrofit this dysfunctional system to earlier vehicles if customers came in complaining about low oil pressure. TSB is one example of this for the F series trucks and Broncos. If you need to wonder why Ford has been so hard pressed to make money recently, you need not look much further than stunts like this. I can’t imagine how screwed up their corporate engineering and marketing culture has to get to even consider something like this, but they did, and boy do they have problems these days.
If you are not sure if this will work for you, read your factory manuals carefully, search around online, and find out the scoop on YOUR vehicle before doing any modifications to your electrical system. I am not responsible for any mishaps or accidents that may happen to, with, for, or unto your vehicle, yourself, or any nearby property or persons as a result of you trying to apply the information I have posted here. This is all strictly FYI to other people curious about how stuff works.
If you do decide to work on your vehicle using the information I have provided, use common sense at all times and stay safe, be smart, and keep your stuff working – well, at least as well it was working when you started.

How to Install an Electrical Oil Pressure Gauge by Amelia Allonsy Electric oil pressure gauges are easy for a DIY-mechanic to install, whether replacing a faulty oil pressure gauge, or a custom, after-market look is desired. Oil pressure gauges are designed to inform the driver when the oil falls below a safe operating level, or when the oil pressure is too high.
Driving a vehicle without an oil pressure gauge can lead to catastrophic engine failure. Most oil pressure gauges come with mounting panels and the necessary installation hardware. The necessary hardware can be purchased from an auto parts dealer, if not included with the oil pressure gauge.
Any of the above are telling you it’s time to check out your oil pressure. Note I said “pressure” not “level” the warning system does not detect low oil level (unless the level is so low the oil .
Perquisite to this course is: DT Why doesn’t my temperature gauge work? Read that before you start tinkering here. Now you know if you will remove this instrument from the car you have to disconnect the temperature sensor from the engine first. Also disconnect the oil pressure tube from the back of the gauge threaded connection. Then carefully guide the temperature sensor line through the firewall as you extract the gauge from the dash.
To open the instrument, twist the trim ring to disengage it from the case and pull forward to remove the trim ring, the glass lense, and two rubber seal rings either side of the glass. Very carefully pull the two indicator needles off the shafts without bending needles or shafts , then lift out the faceplate.
OIl pressure still drops after changing oil sending unit?
Oil pressure in Electric sensor units Sensor units for electric gauges work by sliding a wiper up a curved blade of known resistance. The wiper is moved by a diaphragm which keeps the sender oil-tight. Electric current is supplied to the gauge from a fused power supply in practice the current is taken from one of the many wires or printed tracks behind the dashboard.
Choose a suitable location to mount the oil pressure gauge; mount the gauge so it is easily viewed while driving. Common mounting locations for aftermarket oil pressure gauges include under the dash, on top of the dash, or set into the dashboard.
Remove old pressure sender. It is located down by the oil filter and has 1 wire on a push on screw connector. Install the original oil pressure sender back in one of the tee ports. Install the gauge line restrictor in the remaining port of the tee. Connect the flex tubing or hydraulic hose to the gauge restrictor.
Be sure to route the tubing or hose away from the exhaust manifolds. Be sure to either use hydraulic hose or oil and heat resistant flex tubing for the pressure line. Do not use copper tubing for the connection to the gauge restrictor or engine. Over a period of time, the vibration will work harden the tubing and cause it to crack and fail. If the gauge is going to mount under the hood, connect it to the end of the hose or flex tubing. If the gauge is going to mount in the passenger compartment you get to find a place to run the tubing through the firewall.
I suggest that you pick your spot from the inside since that is the area with the most difficult access. Do not run the tubing through the exact same hole as the steering shaft. It will tangle up with the steering shaft and cause major problems.

Bellows[ edit ] A pile of pressure capsules with corrugated diaphragms in an aneroid barograph In gauges intended to sense small pressures or pressure differences, or require that an absolute pressure be measured, the gear train and needle may be driven by an enclosed and sealed bellows chamber, called an aneroid, which means “without liquid”. Early barometers used a column of liquid such as water or the liquid metal mercury suspended by a vacuum. This bellows configuration is used in aneroid barometers barometers with an indicating needle and dial card , altimeters , altitude recording barographs , and the altitude telemetry instruments used in weather balloon radiosondes.
These devices use the sealed chamber as a reference pressure and are driven by the external pressure. Other sensitive aircraft instruments such as air speed indicators and rate of climb indicators variometers have connections both to the internal part of the aneroid chamber and to an external enclosing chamber. Magnetic coupling[ edit ] These gauges use the attraction of two magnets to translate differential pressure into motion of a dial pointer.
We get asked all the time, how can I monitor my cars oil pressure? Well, its easy, with an oil pressure gauge! But, thats not the full answer, thats the first half of the answer, the next part is a question.

Magnetic coupling[ edit ] These gauges use the attraction of two magnets to translate differential pressure into motion of a dial pointer. As differential pressure increases, a magnet attached to either a piston or rubber diaphragm moves. A rotary magnet that is attached to a pointer then moves in unison. To create different pressure ranges, the spring rate can be increased or decreased. Spinning rotor gauge[ edit ] The spinning rotor gauge works by measuring the amount a rotating ball is slowed by the viscosity of the gas being measured.
The ball is made of steel and is magnetically levitated inside a steel tube closed at one end and exposed to the gas to be measured at the other. It is accurate and stable enough to be used as a secondary standard.

Procedures for Oil Pressure Testing Why Perform Oil Pressure Testing On this page we will discuss how to perform oil pressure testing and what can cause lower than expected results. But first lets talk about why we should bother with testing it at all. Engine oil pressure is a strong indication of your motors overall internal health. Just like they use blood pressure to determine the health of the human body.
The testing procedure is performed with mechanical gauges. Factory gauges might not be accurate or tell the whole story.

Here is where the factory sensor is located. It is near the oil filter , but around the corner from the filter. Feel free to contact me with any questions! I thought the oil sending unit was on the side of the oil pan? We are looking for the oil pressure unit.
Sep 12, · Oil thins as it warms. Therefore, warmer oil = lower pressure. 10 psi per rpm is the old school standard, but really just pay attention to what it usually is and watch for deltas.
Sublime There is not in existence a computer that can tell a person what is wrong with a car. There are scan tools that “talk” to the cars various modules. These modules are capable of telling the scan tool the various data that the module sees. If there is a code set for a lean exhaust condition, for example, then a technician has to actually start the diagnostic process to determine why the PCM sees, or has seen, a lean condition on one or both banks.
There are numerous possibilities of what has caused the condition. The module, nor the scan tool, have the capability of diagnosing the cause of the issue. This is the same for any code that is set in the vehicles computer memory. I do this for a living, five days a week, eleven hours a day. If there was a computer that could diagnose a car, technicians would not be needed.
Trust me, there is no computer capable of diagnosing a damn thing. It takes a human with intelligence to diagnose these cars. That’s where a person with knowledge of vehicle computer systems is really needed. And that’s what I do
